Worship

Sermons and Praise Songs

Presbyterians believe that as Christians, our "worship, witness, and service are inseparable."  Our presence with fellow believers in worship informs, empowers and inspires our Christian witness to the gospel, and our service to others.  Care is taken to keep the focus of worship on God, where it truly belongs, and not on ourselves.

Scripture and prayer are important aspects of worship at First Presbyterian Church.  Our sanctuary, while beautiful, is simple.  Our music is centered on praise and adoration of God, and on God's love and care for us as.  Opportunities are offered each Sunday for both contemporary and traditional worship.  Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month at both services.

A nursery is provided during both services for infants and toddlers.  Preschool-aged children are encouraged to participate in worship, and may leave with a care-giver after the "children's message" or may remain in the sanctuary "with their grown-ups."

Special services are held for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, and Christmas.  Times and dates for these will be posted on the "News and Events" page of this web site.

What to Expect

You'll be greeted by one of our ushers as you enter the sanctuary and will receive a bulletin with a printed order of worship.  Following a welcome and a few announcements, the service will begin with music and hymns of praise.  You'll then be given an opportunity to (privately) offer to God a prayer of confession for "things done and things left undone" that you believe to be outside God's will for your life.  Following confession, you'll be invited to "Pass the Peace of Christ" with those nearby; this simply means a handshake and a shared blessing of "The Peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!"  Then children will be invited to the front of the sanctuary for a special children's message, after which they may remain for the rest of the service or leave with a care-giver.  Then comes a time of prayer, lead by one of our worship leaders, followed by Scripture readings, a message, a receiving of offerings, and more music.  Both services include an affirmation of faith; at our traditional service, we use The Apostles' Creed, and at our early service, a simple, contemporary creed of faith.  Following a closing hymn, worshippers are sent out with a blessing.  The first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Communion at both services (the sharing of small servings of bread and juice in remembrance of Christ's sacrifice on our behalf).  All baptized Christians are invited to participate in communion.
